Chapter Six

The next twenty-four hours passed quicker than Bailey could have anticipated. A part of her was nervous about telling Courtney how she felt, but what could possibly go wrong when she had the planets, God, and a witch’s spell on her side? Nothing, she told herself as she made her way to her local florist. Most of the time she dreaded Friday the thirteenth, but this time it seemed different. She didn’t jump out of her skin when a black cat ran across her path. Nor did she avoid walking under ladders as she made her way along the narrow pavement that led to the shops.

The bell above the florist’s door jingled when she opened it. Bailey stood in the doorway for a few moments in awe at the assortment of flowers and inhaled all of the differing scents. She moved into the shop when a woman came out from a room behind the counter, a bright smile on her face. ‘Good morning.’

‘Morning,’ Bailey said, closing the door behind her, before walking over to her.

‘How can I help?”

‘I need a single rose.’

‘Of course.’ The florist looked knowingly at her and for a split second, Bailey thought she was in on her little secret. Don’t be so silly, how on earth would she know you visited a witch yesterday?

‘Let’s see, I have long stemmed white roses, red roses, yellow roses.’ The florist walked over to the side of the room where buckets full of roses were stored.

Bailey’s eyes roamed over each individual rose, stopping when she came across a multi-coloured one that stood out proudly amongst a bunch of yellow roses. She had never seen such a rose in her life, which told her one thing—that’s the one. It had to be a sign.

‘I’ll take this one,’ she said plucking the rose from the bucket.

Twenty minutes later, she walked into her office building on an unusual high and literally floated along the corridor. Everything in the world felt right. And if Tabitha was correct, things were only going to get better.

‘That is the strangest rose I’ve ever seen.’ Dixie eyed the rose Bailey held in her hand with interest as she followed Bailey to her office.

‘Tell me about it.’ Bailey dropped onto her chair and delicately lifted the rose to her nose and sniffed it. ‘It’s beautiful isn’t it? Have you ever seen a rose this colour before?’

‘Nope. So I take it that’s the rose you’re going to give Courtney?’

‘You’re right about that.’

Dixie gave her a sheepish smile. ‘You’re not even nervous are you?’

‘No.’ And to her surprise she really wasn’t. Somehow she knew inherently everything was going to be all right. That she had nothing to fear. Not anymore. Even Kiddicat had been affectionate towards her that morning and that was definitely out of the ordinary.

‘I’m glad to hear it!’ Dixie took a seat opposite and leant forward on her elbows. ‘Just think, this will be behind you soon and you’re going to kick yourself for not telling her the truth about how you felt sooner.
